Roman Heritage Tour - Detailed Itinerary

Algeria is the second country in the world after Italy, home to the largest number of Roman sites and remains among the most alive and well preserved. Rome, after getting rid of its powerful rival Carthage in the year 146 BC, decided a century later to include Numidia to become the new master of North Africa. They built more than 500 cities.

Day 1
Arrive Algiers

Arrival in Algiers. Reception at Algiers international airport and transfer to the hotel. Panoramic tour of Algiers (depending on the time of arrival). Dinner at the restaurant. Night in Algiers.

Day 2
Algiers - Tipaza - Algiers

Departure towards Tipaza. Visit the site of Mauritania "Tomb of the Christian". Continue to Cherchell or Caesarea during the reign of Juba II. Visit the Archaeological Museum and the Mosaic Park. Lunch. Visit of Tipaza, Roman site, which in the first century BC became a city of art and the centre of Greco-Roman civilization in North Africa. Visit the archaeological museum. Dinner and overnight in Algiers.

Day 3
Algiers - Setif (Setifis)

Departure to Setif to reach the Roman site of Djemila, meaning "the beautiful one" in Arabic. Visit the archaeological site that was founded during the reign of Emperor Nerva (96-98). Its sublime Roman ruins are in an excellent state of conservation and were declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1981. Djémila or "Cuicul" which was built on uneven ground is one of the most important Roman cities of the late 2nd century. Lunch. Panoramic tour of Setif. Check - in at the hotel and free time. Dinner and overnight in Setif.

Day 4
Setif - Batna

Departure for the city of Batna. After lunch visit Timgad or "Thamugadi" - one of the most famous Roman cities in North Africa. Visit of the Pompeii of North Africa and its museum. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history of the Roman colony of Timgad dates back to the year 100 A.D. It was founded by Emperor Trajan. Dinner and overnight in Batna.

Day 5
Souk Ahras (Thagaste) - Guelma (Galama)

Visit of Souk Ahras, the birthplace of Saint Augustine (Aurelius Augustinus) born on November 13, 354. Visit of the olive tree of Saint Augustine and Madaure, Numidian city which was under Roman occupation from the 1st century AD. Madaure was famous and known for its schools. Saint-Augustin studied there. The ancient remains extend over an area of 30 hectares with a Roman forum, basilicas, oil mills, theater to be seen on site. Visit of Khamissa - Thubarsicu Numidarum - a Roman colony under the reign of Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD. Important Bishops are mentioned to have been there between 354 and 411 such as Fortinius, Maurentius and Jamarius. Departure to Guelma. Dinner and overnight at GUELMA.

Day 6
Guelma (Galama) - Constantine

Guelma became a Roman city at the end of the 3rd century AD. Visit its archaeological museum and the Roman theater with its 4,500 seats. This Numidian city shelters the statue of Saint Augustine in its museum. The citiy had several bishops including Donatius, Megalius and Possidus. Dinner and overnight in Constantine.

Day 7
Constantine - Annaba (Hippo Regius) - Algiers

Visit the old city of Constantine and its suspension bridges. Visit the Cirta Museum and the Great Mosque. We continue to Annaba where we visit the museum and the "Basilica of Hippo" dedicated to St. Augustine. Saint Augustin,bishop of Hippo (354-430 after J-C), is one of the four Fathers of the Latin Church. From the forecourt, the view extends over the Annaba golf course. Visit the Roman archaeological site of Hippo at the foot of the basilica. Walk on the main Boulevard du Front de mer. Lunch. In the early evening, transfer to Annaba airport and flight to Algiers (approx. 1 hour flight). Dinner and overnight in Algiers.

Day 8
Departure

Visit of the Kasbah of Algiers. The Casbah is the heart of the city and remains an architectural reference with its narrow streets and its Moorish art treasures. The Kasbah of Algiers is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit of the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa, established on a promontory overlooking the district of Bab El Oued and the Bay of Algiers, the basilica was built from 1858 to 1872. Lunch. Visit of the Palais des Raïs (Bastion 23) is one of the most important historical monuments of the city of Algiers and represents one of the last witnesses who physically attest to the extension of the Medina of El Djazaïr (Kasbah) to the sea in the Ottoman era (16th / 19th century). Transfer to the airport and departure.

This Algeria tour will take you traveling from Algiers toward the port city of Oran, while exploring spectacular Roman sites such as Tipaza and Tlemcen along the way. If you have an early morning arrival, you will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Kasbah in the afternoon.

Day 2
Algiers / Tipaza / Cherchell / Oran

After breakfast, you will depart for the Roman sites of Tipaza. Here you will visit the museum and the archeological site. Tipaza archeological site holds the largest basilica in North Africa and the Basilica of St Salsa, who was a local martyr in the 4th century. Your next stop will be Cherchell, where you will learn about the ancient Roman past and visit two archaeological museums. When you are ready continue by road to Oran, the second largest city in Algeria.

Day 3
Oran / Tlemcen / Oran

After breakfast take an early morning departure to the historic city of Tlemcen. This city was once an important center for Islam in the region. Explore the 13th century Mosque of Sidi Bel Hassan, Great Mosque, and the 13th century ruins of ancient Mansourah. Return to Oran for night.

Day 4
Oran / Algiers

Today you will enjoy the historic and modern sites in Oran. You will explore the Bey's Palace, the 14th century fort of Merinid Sultan Abou Hassan, Cathedral de Sacre Coeur, and the Ahmed Zabana National Museum. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea from mountainside site of the Cathedral of Sacre Coeur. When you have visited the sites in Oran return back to Algiers for night.

Day 5
Departure from Algiers

If time remains before your departure flight, you will take an Algiers city mini tour. Transfer to Algiers International airport for departure.

Day 1
Arrive Algiers

Arrive in Algiers and transfer to your hotel for two nights. Depending on your arrival time, we can take a city tour which will visit sites such as the Notre Dame d'Afrique, the French colonial architecture, and the Palais des Rais. If you have an early morning arrival, you will visit the Kasbah in the afternoon.

Day 2
Algiers - Ghardaia

Depending on your departure flight to Ghardaia you will either take a domestic flight back to Algiers or drive via the autoroute. In Algiers you will transfer to the evening flight to Ghardaia. Ghardaia is in the culturally diverse UNESCO World Heritage region of the M'Zab valley. You will transfer to your hotel and if time is available explore the markets and architecture which is unique to this region. Step back into time as you enjoy the local customs and culture. Visit the historic cities and sites in the M'Zab valley. Your guide will take you through traditional marketplaces, fully rich in culture and unique architecture. Spend the day wandering the narrow streets, visiting important religious monuments and mosques, and enjoying the natural beauty found in this Oasis region.

Day 3
Ghardaia - Menia

In the morning departure to Menia. Once there visitors can enjoy the old palace, the municipal museum, the church of San José, the mausoleum of "Père Foucault" and the lake of migratory birds and they will see real dinosaurs' bones that were found in the area.

Day 4
Menia - Timimoune

In the morning departure to Timimoune taking advantage of the beautiful and varied landscape of the area. The visitor will see multiple and wonderful ksour (most of them are more than 10 centuries old) and they will see the wonderful water sharing old technique called "El fougara" alongside with the artisanal market and the wonderful gate of the city "Bab el Soudan".

Day 5
Timimoune - Benni Abbas - Taghit

In the morning visitor will visit the city of Beni Abbas. On the way the group stops by the fossils of sea creatures and we visit the old ksar of Beni Abbas in the middle of a wonderful oasis and we finish with "La Chapelle de Père Foucault" then the trip to Taghit "the pearl of the Sahara" at the end of the day.

Day 6
Taghit

In Taghit we visit the old ksar and the big wonderful dune. Visitor will experience camel riding and we will visit prehistory drawings and the lake which is in the middle of a wonderful oasis.

Day 7
Bechar - Algiers

Trip from Bechar to Algiers. Algiers city tour then transfer to the airport.

Djanet Tassili N'Ajjer Tour - Detailed Itinerary

Tassili n'Ajjer is a mountain range in the Algerian section of the Sahara Desert. It is a vast plateau in south-east Algeria covering an area of 72,000 km². The Tassili is the biggest museum in open sky in the world, it is UNESCO World heritage, and the Tassili civilization was inhabited 5000 years before Egypt pharaohs.

Day 1
Arrive Algiers

Arrival in Algiers on our arrangement. Evening flight from Algiers to Djanet (exact time to be confirmed before).

Day 2
Djanet - Tassili National Park

We will arrive in the desert town of Djanet in the early morning. After arranging all the necessary entrance formalities for Tassili National Park, we start our journey to our first bivouac spot. On the way we will enjoy the amazing views- erosion has sculpted a wonderful landscape of columns and palaces, an incredible and diverse world of rock and sand formations. Dinner and overnight at bivouac.

Day 3
Tadrart plateau - Moul N'Aga

We head to the South entering the Tadrart plateau. Dinner and overnight in tents at the foot of the great dune of Moul N'Aga.

Day 4
Moul N'Aga - Tehe Tahoussait - Tin Merzouga

Today we will make our way through the dunes of Moul N'Aga to the site of Tehe Tahoussait and its impressive arches. We follow the immense wadi of Djaren visiting rock engravings and paintings. Overnight at Tin Merzouga.

Day 5
Tin Merzouga - Adjalati

We leave Tin Merzouga and head for Imesnegha and its caves polished by erosion. After lunch, we cross the Wadi In Djaren to Adjalati leaving the Tadrart plateau. Overnight in Adjalati.

Day 6
Adjalati - Djanet - Tegharghert

Return to Djanet by the Imaharhaten plateau. Make a stop in Djanet for lunch before continuing to Tegharghert where we stay for the night.

Day 7
Tegharghert - Djanet

Today we visit the famous engraving of "the weeping cow" in Tegharghert before returning back to Djanet. Hotel in Djanet.

Day 8
Djanet - Algiers

Transfer to airport for our flight back to Algiers. Hotel in Algiers.

Day 9
Departure

Departure from Algiers on own arrangement.
